Voltarol is a widely recognized topical pain relief medication that contains diclofenac diethylammonium, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) designed to target joint and muscle pain, inflammation, and swelling.
The active ingredient diclofenac was originally developed and synthesized in Switzerland by Ciba-Geigy (which later merged with Sandoz to form Novartis) in the 1960s. For decades, Novartis managed the global Voltaren and Voltarol brands. In 2015, Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) formed a joint venture for consumer healthcare products, which ultimately transitioned Voltaren/Voltarol entirely into GSK's portfolio.
In July 2022, GSK spun off its consumer healthcare business into a new independent company named Haleon plc. Today, Haleon owns and manages the Voltarol brand globally. European batches of Voltarol Emulgel are primarily manufactured at Haleon's production facilities in Nyon, Switzerland, with distribution handled by local subsidiaries including Haleon UK.
