SanDisk is one of the world's most widely recognized names in flash memory technology, producing a vast range of USB flash drives, memory cards, and solid-state storage devices. The company was founded in 1988 in Milpitas, California, under the original name SunDisk by Eli Harari, Sanjay Mehrotra, and Jack Yuan. In 1995, it was renamed SanDisk and pioneered standard commercial flash memory formats, including developing the CompactFlash and SD card standards alongside partners.
In 2016, SanDisk was acquired by the American digital storage giant Western Digital Corporation (WDC) for approximately $19 billion. Under Western Digital's ownership, SanDisk operates as a primary consumer-facing brand for flash storage solutions alongside WD and WD_BLACK.
SanDisk products sold in the United Kingdom and globally are manufactured through an extensive international supply chain. Semiconductor fabrication and NAND flash memory production are largely concentrated in Japan (through joint-venture fabrication plants with Kioxia), while device assembly, testing, and packaging primarily take place across facilities in China, Malaysia, and other parts of Southeast Asia.
