De Cecco is one of Italy's most celebrated and traditional pasta makers. The brand was established in 1886 by Nicola De Cecco and his brother Filippo Giovanni De Cecco in Fara San Martino, a small town nestled in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Prior to founding the pasta factory, the De Cecco family had been operating a stone flour mill in the area since 1831. Filippo De Cecco is credited with inventing a low-temperature artificial drying system in 1889, revolutionizing the pasta industry by freeing production from unpredictable weather patterns.
De Cecco pasta is renowned for using premium durum wheat semolina, pure spring water from the Maiella mountains, and traditional bronze extrusion dies (trafilata al bronzo), which give the pasta a rough surface ideal for holding sauces. This product, Penne Piccole Rigate no. 177, is manufactured in Italy at the company's historic production facilities located in Fara San Martino (Chieti), Italy.
De Cecco remains an independent, family-controlled Italian business operated by F.lli De Cecco di Filippo Fara San Martino S.p.A. Unlike many heritage food brands that have been absorbed into multinational food conglomerates, De Cecco is still owned and governed primarily by members of the De Cecco family, preserving its traditional values and focus on premium quality.
