HEMA (originally Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam) is an iconic Dutch department store chain known for selling its own private-label everyday essentials, stationery, homeware, clothing, and treats such as Dutch stroopwafels. Founded in Amsterdam in 1926 by Arthur Isaac and Bernard Meyer, the retail chain was originally established to offer affordable everyday products at standardized prices.
While HEMA previously operated brick-and-mortar stores across the United Kingdom before restructuring its international presence in the early 2020s, its unique branded goods remain well recognized among UK consumers through online retail, select export distributors, and cross-border European retail.
Today, HEMA is owned by a joint venture formed by the Dutch investment firm Parcom Capital and Mississippi Ventures (the investment vehicle of the Dutch billionaire Van Eerd family, founders of Jumbo supermarkets), returning the legacy chain back into domestic Dutch hands. HEMA sources and manufactures its broad assortment of goods across multiple countries in Europe and Asia according to strict European quality standards.
