Danbo Cheese

Danbo is a quintessential semi-hard cow's milk cheese originating from Denmark. Known for its supple texture, delicate yellowish hue, and mild, nutty taste that sharpens with age, Danbo is Denmark's most popular household cheese and is widely enjoyed throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.

Historically, the creation of Danbo dates back to the late 19th century (around 1897) when Rasmus Nielsen developed it at Kirkeby Dairy in Funen, inspired by European traditions such as the Dutch Gouda or German Steppenkäse. In recognition of its traditional heritage and strictly defined production standards, Danbo was granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI / BGB) status by the European Commission, meaning authentic Danbo must be produced in Denmark following traditional Danish methods.

Today, Danbo cheese sold in the UK and worldwide is predominantly produced by Danish dairy cooperatives, most notably Arla Foods amba. While various Danish dairies produce regional variants under the generic cheese variety name, Arla Foods operates as the leading producer and distributor. Outside of the culinary realm, the word 'Danbo' is also well known as a fictional cardboard box robot character from the Japanese manga series Yotsuba&!, created by Kiyohiko Azuma, which is entirely distinct from the Danish dairy specialty.
