Marginalia Search

Marginalia Search is an independent, non-commercial web search engine designed to prioritize non-commercial, small-web, and text-heavy websites. It was created by Swedish software developer Viktor Taftin as an alternative to mainstream algorithms that prioritize SEO-optimized commercial content. The project is notable for its unique technical architecture, often running on consumer-grade hardware or small server setups to prove that searching the web does not require hyperscale infrastructure.

Originally a solo project, the search engine gained significant attention in the tech community for its focus on the 'small web.' While it remains an independent initiative, it has received support and funding from organizations like the NLnet Foundation to further its mission of open-source development and web diversity. Its 'manufacturing' or hosting origin is centered in Sweden, where Taftin is based and maintains the hardware.
