The brand carries a long heritage of French artisanal distilling, dating back to the 19th century.

In 2016, the brand underwent a significant ownership change when the Italian beverage giant Campari Group acquired Société des Produits Marnier-Lapostolle (SPML). Today, while the manufacturing remains strictly rooted in the Cognac region of France to maintain its protected designation of origin, the global brand and distribution are managed by the Campari Group, headquartered in Milan, Italy.
