LineageOS is a free and open-source operating system for set-top boxes, smartphones, and tablet computers, based on the Android mobile platform. It is the direct successor to the highly popular custom ROM known as CyanogenMod, which was discontinued after Cyanogen Inc. announced it was shutting down infrastructure behind the project. Unlike many commercial operating systems, LineageOS is not manufactured in a traditional sense but is developed collaboratively by a global community of contributors.

The project was officially launched in December 2016. Because it is an open-source initiative, it does not have a traditional corporate owner or a centralized manufacturing facility. Development takes place virtually across the globe, with servers and infrastructure maintained by the LineageOS Project team. Its legal existence is primarily represented through the Software in the Public Interest (SPI) for financial handling, though the intellectual property and community direction remain decentralized.

While the brand originated in the United States as a continuation of the work started by Stefanie Kondik (formerly Steve Kondik), it has evolved into a global entity. The software is designed to provide users with a clean, customizable, and privacy-focused version of Android, often extending the life of hardware that is no longer supported by its original manufacturers.
