The brand was originally created in 1927 by a chemist in Newcastle upon Tyne as a source of energy for the sick, initially known as Glucozade.

Historically, the brand was synonymous with Beecham and later GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). However, in 2013, the brand underwent a significant ownership shift when it was acquired by the Japanese multinational Suntory. Today, it is managed by Suntory Beverage & Food Great Britain and Ireland, while the global ultimate parent remains Suntory Holdings Limited, based in Tokyo. The product is primarily manufactured in the UK, notably at the Coleford factory in Gloucestershire.
