As of June 2024, Proton AG transitioned to a unique ownership model designed to safeguard its mission indefinitely. The controlling interest is now held by the non-profit Proton Foundation. This structure prevents hostile takeovers and ensures that the company prioritizes people and privacy over profit. The remaining shares are largely held by employees, with minority stakes owned by non-profit entities like FONGIT and members of the community, ensuring the brand remains independent of Big Tech or venture capital influence.
