Yoplait is a globally recognised dairy brand with deep roots in France, where it was established in 1965 through the merger of six regional dairy cooperatives. The brand's distinctive six-petalled flower logo represents these original founding cooperatives. In the UK and Ireland, Yoplait has long been a staple in the yogurt aisle, originally growing through partnerships and licensing agreements.
In Ireland, the brand has been present since 1973, initially through a partnership with Glanbia. Today, much of the production for the Irish and UK markets is handled via local entities like Yoplait Ireland Ltd. and Yoplait UK Ltd., with significant manufacturing occurring in Irish facilities. This allows the brand to maintain its commitment to using high-quality dairy and traditional recipes.
Ownership of the brand has seen significant shifts over the years. While General Mills previously held a controlling interest in Yoplait's European operations, it sold its 51% stake back to the French dairy cooperative Sodiaal in 2021. This transition returned the European business to its original creator. As of 2026, Sodiaal remains the ultimate owner of the brand's European and international operations (excluding the US), ensuring the brand continues to operate under the influence of its cooperative heritage.
