Nikwax was founded in 1977 by Nick Brown in London, England. Driven by a passion for the outdoors and a background in chemistry, Brown developed the first Nikwax product (a waterproofing wax for leather) to solve the problem of standard waterproofing treatments softening boots and compromising their support. From these humble beginnings, the brand pioneered water-based, PFC-free (fluorocarbon-free) waterproofing solutions, becoming a global leader in environmentally friendly gear aftercare.

The brand's products, including the Nubuck & Suede Proof Spray, are primarily manufactured at Nikwax's own facility in the South East of England. This facility serves as a hub for both research and development and large-scale production, ensuring that all products meet the company's rigorous environmental and performance standards.

In February 2022, Nikwax underwent a significant ownership transition when Nick Brown sold the company to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). This move was designed to protect the brand's long-term legacy and ethical principles, effectively making the employees the ultimate owners of the company. Today, Nikwax remains headquartered in Wadhurst, UK, and is managed as an international, employee-owned business with distribution in over 50 countries.
