Beeper is a universal messaging application designed to unify various chat platforms into a single interface. Founded in 2020 by Eric Migicovsky and his team, the brand originally gained viral attention for its innovative approach to bridging proprietary messaging services like iMessage, WhatsApp, and Telegram through the Matrix protocol. The company initially operated as an independent startup based in Palo Alto, California, focusing on 'on-device' and cloud-based bridging solutions.
In April 2024, Beeper was acquired by Automattic, the powerhouse behind WordPress.com and Tumblr. This acquisition integrated Beeper into Automattic's growing suite of communication tools, placing it alongside other messaging initiatives like Texts.com. Today, Beeper continues to be developed as a digital product, with its primary software engineering and operational base located in the United States, under the leadership and global infrastructure of its parent company, Automattic.
