Bolletje Biscuits and Crackers

Bolletje is a renowned Dutch bakery brand that has become a staple in the Netherlands, particularly famous for its 'beschuit' (Dutch rusk). Founded in 1867 by Gerardus Johannes ter Beek in Almelo, the company evolved from a small local bakery into a national household name. The brand is deeply ingrained in Dutch culture, notably through the tradition of serving 'beschuit met muisjes' to celebrate the birth of a child.

Over the decades, Bolletje expanded its portfolio to include a wide range of crackers, crispbread, and seasonal snacks like pepernoten. Despite its growth and various ownership changes, the brand maintains a strong identity centered on traditional baking methods combined with modern production scale. To this day, the primary manufacturing facilities remain concentrated in the Netherlands, specifically in Almelo and Heerde.

In terms of corporate ownership, Bolletje was acquired in 2013 by the German family-owned company Borggreve. This acquisition allowed Bolletje to maintain its distinct Dutch heritage while benefiting from the logistical and financial backing of a larger European confectionery and bakery group. The brand continues to lead the Dutch market in the rusk and cracker categories.
