O2 is one of the United Kingdom's leading telecommunications providers, offering mobile networks, fixed-line broadband, and digital services. Originally launched in 1985 as Cellnet (a joint venture between BT and Securicor), the brand was rebranded as O2 in 2002 following its demerger from BT. Since then, it has evolved into a cornerstone of the British digital infrastructure.

Technically, the service is 'manufactured' or delivered through a vast network of cellular towers and fiber optics located across the UK. While the hardware used by the network is sourced globally from technology partners like Ericsson and Nokia, the service provision is centered in the UK market. The brand has been a major player in the European mobile market for decades, famously known for its sponsorship of The O2 Arena in London.

In 2021, O2 underwent a major structural change through a 50:50 joint venture between Spain's Telefónica and the American-owned Liberty Global. This merger combined O2 with Virgin Media to create Virgin Media O2 (VMO2). Today, the brand remains a major British consumer name but is ultimately under the ownership of these two international telecom giants, headquartered in Spain and the United States respectively.
