JBL is an American audio electronics brand that has been a cornerstone of the sound industry for decades. It was founded in 1946 by James Bullough Lansing, a pioneering audio engineer who was also the vice president of Altec Lansing. Since its inception, JBL has been synonymous with high-quality sound, ranging from professional studio monitors and cinema sound systems to consumer-grade speakers and headphones.
While JBL's research, development, and engineering historically originated in the United States, the majority of its modern consumer electronics, like the JBL GO 3 portable speaker, are manufactured in China. This is common for global technology companies looking to leverage efficient mass-production ecosystems. JBL operates under the HARMAN division, which maintains a global supply chain to distribute its products to almost every country worldwide.
In 1969, JBL was acquired by Sidney Harman, leading to the formation of Harman International Industries. In a landmark deal in 2017, the South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics acquired Harman International for approximately $8 billion. This acquisition integrated JBL into the Samsung ecosystem, allowing for technological synergies between Samsung's digital devices and JBL's audio expertise. Today, Samsung Electronics remains the ultimate owner of the JBL brand, overseeing its operations from their headquarters in Suwon, South Korea.
