Known primarily for its specialized intimate care line, the brand was originally developed by Rottapharm, an Italian pharmaceutical company founded by Luigi Rovati in 1961. The brand's ownership has changed hands through several major pharmaceutical acquisitions. Rottapharm was first acquired by the Swedish company Meda AB in 2014. Subsequently, Meda was acquired by the American pharmaceutical giant Mylan in 2016. In 2020, Mylan merged with Upjohn (a former division of Pfizer) to form Viatris. Consequently, Saugella is currently owned by Viatris, a global healthcare company headquartered in the United States.
