Rowntree & Co. in York, England, as 'Chocolate Beans', the product was rebranded to its iconic 'Smarties' name in 1937. The brand has become famous for its vibrant colors and cylindrical cardboard packaging.

While the brand's roots are firmly planted in the United Kingdom, manufacturing now takes place in several locations across the globe to serve different regional markets. Key manufacturing hubs include Nestlé facilities in Germany and Canada. In North America, the 'Smarties' name is used by a different company for a tablet candy, while the chocolate product is sold as 'Smarties' primarily outside the United States or marketed under different branding within US borders.

Today, the brand is owned by Nestlé S.A., following its acquisition of the Rowntree Mackintosh company in 1988. Nestlé continues to update the brand, including a shift to using natural colorings and sustainable paper packaging to align with modern environmental and health standards.
