The brand is famous for its distinctive lilac packaging and the Simmental cow mascot. While it has Swiss roots, the brand's production has expanded significantly across Europe over the last century.

Today, Milka chocolate is produced in various locations to serve the global market, with primary factories located in Lörrach (Germany), Bludenz (Austria), and Svoboda (Ukraine), as well as other facilities across the European Union. This ensures widespread availability and consistent quality of their signature Alpine milk chocolate products.

Ownership of the Milka brand has changed through several mergers and acquisitions. It was part of Jacobs Suchard until it was acquired by Kraft Foods. In 2012, Kraft Foods split into two companies, and the snacks and confectionery division became Mondelēz International. As of 2024 and beyond, Mondelēz International remains the ultimate owner, managing the brand from its global headquarters in the United States.
