BritBox is a prominent digital video subscription service that brings the best of British television to a global audience. Originally launched in 2017 as a collaborative venture between the United Kingdom's two largest broadcasters, the BBC and ITV, the platform was created to provide a dedicated home for classic and contemporary British content, including dramas, comedies, and documentaries.
Over the years, the ownership structure of BritBox has evolved to reflect shifting market strategies. In 2024, ITV plc sold its entire 50% stake in BritBox International to BBC Studios for £255 million, making the BBC’s commercial arm the sole owner of the international service. This move allowed BBC Studios to integrate the brand fully into its global media strategy. While the service is marketed worldwide, including in North America and Australia, its content remains rooted in British production, primarily filmed and developed throughout the United Kingdom.
Today, BritBox stands as a premier example of British cultural exports, featuring iconic series like Father Brown, Shetland, and Luther. As a wholly owned subsidiary of BBC Studios, the brand continues to expand its digital footprint, offering a specialized alternative to larger, general-interest streaming platforms by focusing on the high-quality storytelling synonymous with British broadcasting.
