Brand Origin and History

Barilla was founded in 1877 by Pietro Barilla as a modest bakery and pasta shop in Parma, Italy. Over more than a century, the family business expanded into one of the world’s leading pasta and bakery brands, recognized globally by its iconic blue packaging and red oval logo.

Manufacturing

While Barilla operates several international production facilities across Europe and North America to serve regional markets, the classic blue-box pasta distributed in Australia—including Rigatoni No. 89—is produced and imported directly from Barilla's pasta manufacturing plants in Italy using durum wheat semolina.

Ownership

Barilla remains an Italian family-owned business. It is owned and operated by Barilla Holding S.p.A., governed primarily by the great-grandsons of founder Pietro Barilla (Guido, Luca, and Paolo Barilla). In Australia, the products are imported, marketed, and distributed via its regional subsidiary, Barilla Australia Pty Ltd.
