Named after the Latin word turdus merula (the common blackbird, depicted prominently on the packaging), Merula is harvested and cold-pressed from olives grown on the family-owned Perales de Valdueza estate located in Mérida, Extremadura, Spain.

Manufacturing and Origin

All olives used in Merula olive oil—predominantly Arbequina, along with Picual, Hojiblanca, and Morisca—are cultivated, milled, blended, and bottled on-site at the Álvarez de Toledo family estate in Extremadura, Spain. The product undergoes careful cold extraction within hours of harvesting to ensure premium quality, balanced acidity, and full flavor retention.

Ownership

The brand is owned and operated by Marqués de Valdueza (the family enterprise led by Alonso Álvarez de Toledo y Urquijo, the 12th Marquess of Valdueza, and his family), headquartered in Spain. It remains an independent family-run agricultural and gourmet food enterprise with distribution worldwide, including specialty food markets across North America.
