Milka is a globally recognized chocolate brand with a rich history dating back to 1901 in Switzerland. It was founded by Philippe Suchard, who had originally opened a confectionery shop in Neuchâtel decades earlier. The brand name itself is a portmanteau of the German words for milk and cocoa ('Milch' and 'Kakao'). Today, Milka is iconic for its distinctive lilac packaging and the 'Lila' cow mascot, representing the Alpine milk used in its recipes.

While its origins are Swiss, Milka's production is now distributed across various European locations, including Germany, Austria, and Poland, to supply the international market. The brand underwent several corporate ownership changes throughout the 20th century, notably being part of Kraft Foods before the company split. Currently, Milka is owned by Mondelēz International, one of the world's largest snack companies headquartered in the United States. Despite its American corporate ownership, Milka maintains its strong European identity and continues to be marketed as a premium Alpine milk chocolate.
