Tazo was founded in 1994 by Steven Smith in Portland, Oregon, as a brand focused on blending high-quality teas with unique botanical and spice profiles. The brand quickly gained prominence for its unconventional marketing and premium packaging, leading to its acquisition by Starbucks in 1999. Under Starbucks' ownership, Tazo became a staple in coffee shops across North America, particularly known for its Chai Latte concentrate which allows consumers to replicate cafe-style drinks at home.
In 2017, Unilever purchased Tazo from Starbucks to bolster its specialty tea portfolio. However, as part of a strategic shift in the tea market, Unilever later divested most of its tea business into a standalone company called ekaterra. In 2022, the private equity firm CVC Capital Partners acquired ekaterra, including the Tazo brand. Today, the brand is managed under the umbrella of Liptea (formerly ekaterra), which is one of the world's largest tea companies. Most Tazo products sold in North America are manufactured in the United States to maintain supply chain efficiency and product freshness for the Canadian and American markets.
