Ribena Blackcurrant Juice

Ribena is a world-renowned fruit juice brand, famously associated with its rich blackcurrant flavor. The brand's history dates back to 1938 when it was developed by H. W. Vernon and the scientist Dr. Vernon Charley at the University of Bristol. It was initially marketed as a health drink due to its high Vitamin C content, famously provided to children in the UK during World War II as a substitute for Vitamin C-rich fruits that were hard to import.

Today, Ribena is a global brand with significant production hubs. While its primary manufacturing remains centered in the United Kingdom, specifically at the Coleford factory in Gloucestershire, it is also produced in other regions including Southeast Asia and Africa to serve local markets. The brand utilizes a vast majority of the British blackcurrant crop, maintaining a deep connection to its agricultural roots.

Ownership of Ribena has transitioned through several major corporations. Originally produced by HW Carter & Co, it became part of Beecham Group, which later merged to form GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). In 2013, the brand was acquired by the Japanese beverage giant Suntory. It is now managed under the Suntory Beverage & Food division, reflecting a blend of British heritage and Japanese corporate stewardship.
