Brand History and Evolution

Smithfield Foods, Inc. traces its origins to 1936 when Joseph W. Luter and his son founded the Smithfield Packing Company in Smithfield, Virginia. The brand quickly became synonymous with high-quality pork products and the world-famous Smithfield Ham, which by law must be processed within the corporate limits of Smithfield to carry the name.

Global Manufacturing Operations

While its heart remains in Virginia, Smithfield operates as a massive global entity. Manufacturing occurs primarily across the United States, but the company also maintains significant production facilities in Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Mexico to serve international markets. This broad footprint allows them to maintain a leading position in the global pork industry.

Ownership and Corporate Structure

In 2013, a significant shift in ownership occurred when the WH Group (formerly known as Shuanghui International Holdings) acquired Smithfield Foods. This acquisition transformed Smithfield into a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based WH Group, the world's largest pork company. Despite the foreign ownership, Smithfield continues to be managed from its headquarters in the United States, maintaining its commitment to American agricultural standards and local distribution networks.
