Founded in 1984 by brothers Fernando and Santiago Aguerre, Reef began as an iconic beach lifestyle brand in San Diego, California. The brand gained global recognition for its high-quality sandals and surf-oriented apparel, deeply rooted in the surfing community and coastal culture.

Over the decades, Reef has undergone several ownership changes to navigate the evolving retail landscape. Originally an independent company, it was acquired by VF Corporation in 2005. In 2018, the brand was sold to the Rockport Group, which was later acquired by Charlesbank Capital Partners. As of 2026, Reef remains a prominent name in the action sports and lifestyle sector under the umbrella of its current investment group owners. Production is distributed across multiple countries, primarily in Asia and South America, to serve its global customer base.
