Merida is a globally recognized bicycle brand that represents a unique synergy between Taiwanese manufacturing excellence and German engineering. The company was founded in 1972 by Ike Tseng, an engineer who was motivated to change the negative perception of Taiwanese-made bicycles. Initially operating as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for other major brands like Raleigh, the company eventually launched its own "Merida" brand in 1988.
Today, Merida remains a family-led enterprise, with the third generation of the Tseng family actively managing the business. The brand's design and research headquarters are located in Magstadt, Germany, where the technical development of their high-performance road, mountain, and electric bikes takes place. These designs are then brought to life in Merida's state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Taiwan and mainland China. Merida is also a significant stakeholder in other major industry names, notably holding a 35% stake in the American brand Specialized, and it continues to be a major force in professional cycling through its partnership with Team Bahrain Victorious.
