Hill's Pet Nutrition was born from a pioneering scientific effort in 1939 when Dr. Mark Morris Sr. formulated a specialized diet to help a guide dog named Buddy suffering from kidney disease. This success led to the formal establishment of Hill's Pet Nutrition in 1948 in Topeka, Kansas, where the company still maintains a significant presence and a state-of-the-art research and development center.

Today, the brand operates as a major subsidiary of the Colgate-Palmolive Company, which acquired the business in 1976. Over the decades, Hill's has expanded its reach globally, specializing in veterinarian-recommended therapeutic diets under the Prescription Diet label and everyday wellness nutrition under the Science Diet brand. While a large portion of its manufacturing occurs in American facilities across Kansas, Kentucky, and Indiana, the company has heavily invested in global capacity with production sites in Europe and specialized research facilities like the Small Paws Innovation Center to cater to the diverse nutritional needs of pets worldwide.
