Marmot outdoor technical apparel

Marmot was founded in 1974 by Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley, initially starting as a 'club' for climbers and outdoor enthusiasts in Grand Junction, Colorado. The brand rose to early fame by providing specialized parkas for the movie The Eiger Sanction. It was a pioneer in technical fabrics, becoming the first outdoor apparel brand to utilize GORE-TEX technology in 1976.

While the brand was born and designed in the United States, its manufacturing is now global to accommodate its international scale. While a small percentage of specialized technical gear has historically been produced in the USA, the vast majority of Marmot clothing and equipment is manufactured in countries like China, Vietnam, Thailand, and other Asian nations.

Ownership of the brand has shifted through several corporate hands over the decades. It was acquired by K2 Sports (under Jarden Corporation) in 2004, which later became part of Newell Brands in 2016. As of late 2024 and moving into 2026, Marmot remains a key part of the Outdoor & Recreation segment of Newell Brands, a massive American consumer goods conglomerate headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.
