Becel Original plant-based spread

Becel is a leading brand of plant-based margarines and spreads, originally developed in the early 1960s. The brand was created by Unilever in response to requests from the medical community for a heart-healthy alternative to butter that was low in saturated fats. The name 'Becel' is derived from the initials B.C.L., standing for Blood Cholesterol Lowering, highlighting its original health-focused mission.

In 2018, Unilever sold its entire spreads division to the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR). This led to the formation of a new company initially known as Upfield, which was rebranded as Flora Food Group in late 2024. Today, Flora Food Group is the world's largest plant-based consumer packaged goods company, managing iconic brands like Becel, Flora, and Blue Band.

Manufacturing of Becel products occurs across a global network of 15 production sites. While the brand has strong roots in the Netherlands and continues to be headquartered in Amsterdam, significant production facilities are located in Germany (Kleve) and Canada (Brantford), serving various international markets with products tailored to local dietary preferences and regulations.
