The 5X Strong Ale is a premium variant that pays homage to the traditional brewing history of the West Country. While originally brewed by Morland, the brand was acquired by Greene King in 1999. It is currently produced at the Greene King brewery in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, maintaining its status as a staple of British brewing heritage.

Greene King itself was acquired in 2019 by CK Asset Holdings, a multinational conglomerate based in Hong Kong, marking a significant shift in its ultimate ownership while keeping the manufacturing processes anchored in the United Kingdom.
