Marabou is an iconic Swedish chocolate brand established in 1916 by the Norwegian businessman Johan Throne Holst, who had previously founded the Freia chocolate factory in Norway. Originally produced in Sundbyberg, Sweden, the brand's production later moved to a large facility in Upplands Väsby. Marabou is deeply embedded in Swedish culture and is widely recognized for its distinctive yellow packaging and rich, creamy texture.
Over the decades, corporate ownership shifted. Marabou became part of Freia Marabou and later Kraft Foods. Following a corporate spin-off and restructuring, the global snacks business of Kraft Foods was renamed Mondelez International in 2012. Today, Marabou is fully owned by Mondelez International, a massive American multinational confectionery, food, and beverage holding company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. While primarily found in Scandinavian markets, Marabou products are increasingly available globally through specialty import stores and online retailers catering to international shoppers in the United Kingdom.
