JBL was founded in 1946 by American audio engineer James Bullough Lansing in Los Angeles, California. Renowned for developing high-fidelity loudspeakers and audio hardware for professional studios, movie theaters, and home audio enthusiasts, JBL quickly established itself as a global benchmark in acoustic technology.
In 1969, JBL was acquired by Jervis Corporation, which later became Harman International Industries. In March 2017, Harman International Industries was acquired by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a South Korean multinational conglomerate. Today, JBL operates as an audio division under Harman International, with Samsung Electronics serving as its ultimate parent and controlling owner.
While product design, acoustics, and software engineering are spearheaded in the United States and global Harman R&D centers, mass assembly and manufacturing for consumer electronics like the JBL PartyBox series primarily take place in China, alongside contract manufacturing facilities across Asia. In Portugal and throughout Europe, the brand's products are distributed through Harman International's regional European subsidiaries and authorized retail partners.
