Oreo was originally developed and introduced in 1912 by the National Biscuit Company (later known worldwide as Nabisco) at its factory in New York City, United States. It has grown to become the world’s best-selling cookie brand, recognized by its classic embossed chocolate wafers and sweet crème filling.
Oreo biscuits are produced in multiple factories across the globe to serve various regional markets. For European markets, including the United Kingdom, production primarily occurs at facilities in countries such as Spain (Viana) and the Czech Republic, alongside plants across North America, Asia, and Australasia for other global consumers.
Nabisco became part of Kraft Foods in 2000. Following the corporate restructuring and split of Kraft Foods in 2012, the global snack and confectionery brands—including Oreo, Cadbury, and Milka—became part of Mondelēz International, Inc., a major multinational snack food corporation headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
