Domestos was originally created in 1929 by William Handley in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. Initially sold door-to-door in refillable stoneware jars to disinfect homes and clean drains, the brand became a staple household disinfectant across Britain.

In 1961, the Domestos business was acquired by the consumer goods multinational Unilever. Today, Domestos is sold globally under Unilever's home care division (sometimes under names like Glorix or Domex in certain markets).

Production of Domestos products takes place at several Unilever manufacturing facilities across Europe and internationally, including plants in the United Kingdom, Poland, and Italy, depending on regional supply chains.
