The label was founded in 1981 by British fashion designer Karen Millen and her partner Kevin Stanford in England. Starting with a loan of just one hundred pounds, the duo manufactured white cotton shirts to sell to friends, which eventually expanded into a network of boutique stores across the United Kingdom and internationally.

In August 2019, after entering administration, the intellectual property and online assets of Karen Millen (along with Coast) were acquired by the British fast-fashion e-commerce giant Boohoo Group PLC. Boohoo transitioned Karen Millen into an online-only luxury brand. Today, Karen Millen remains headquartered under the Boohoo Group in the United Kingdom, while its apparel and accessories are manufactured across global supply chains spanning countries in Europe and Asia.
