Leerdammer is a Dutch semi-hard cheese produced from pasteurized cow's milk, known for its sweet, nutty flavor and characteristic holes. The cheese was originally developed in 1974 by businessmen Cees Boterkooper and Bastiaan Baars in Schoonrewoerd, near the town of Leerdam in the Netherlands.
Historically, the brand was acquired by the French cheese group Bel (Fromageries Bel) in 2002. However, in 2021, Bel reached an agreement to sell Leerdammer and its associated European subsidiaries to the French dairy giant Lactalis (Groupe Lactalis) in exchange for Bel shares held by Lactalis.
Leerdammer cheese is manufactured primarily at its dedicated dairy production facilities in the Netherlands, including Schoonrewoerd and Dalfsen, using local Dutch milk.
