JBL was founded in 1946 by James Bullough Lansing in the United States following his departure from Altec Lansing. JBL quickly established itself as a leading innovator in audio engineering, sound reproduction, loudspeakers, and studio monitors, becoming a cornerstone of both consumer audio and professional live sound systems around the world.
In 1969, JBL was acquired by Jervis Corporation, which later became Harman International Industries. In March 2017, Harman International Industries was acquired by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a major South Korean multinational technology conglomerate. Today, JBL operates as an audio brand under Harman International, an autonomous subsidiary of Samsung Electronics.
While JBL maintains research, development, and acoustics engineering hubs across the United States and Europe, its consumer-grade consumer audio products—such as the JBL Tune series of Bluetooth headphones—are primarily manufactured in high-volume production facilities in China and neighboring Asian manufacturing hubs.
