Akai was originally established in 1929 in Tokyo, Japan, as a high-end consumer electronics manufacturer specializing in audio and video equipment. The brand gained worldwide fame for its reel-to-reel tape recorders and high-fidelity sound systems during the mid-20th century.

Following the bankruptcy of the original Akai Electric Company in 2000, the brand name was acquired by Grande Holdings, a Hong Kong-based company. Today, the Akai brand is licensed out to various manufacturers and distributors around the world for a wide range of products including televisions, air conditioners, and multimedia players like the AKDV612T DVD player. Consequently, production is largely outsourced to facilities in China and other Asian manufacturing hubs, while the intellectual property and brand rights are managed under the umbrella of Nimble Holdings (formerly Grande Holdings) in Hong Kong.
