RAC Breakdown Membership

The RAC (Royal Automobile Club) is one of the United Kingdom's most historic and prominent motoring organizations, established in 1897. Originally founded to promote the interests of early car owners and motor sport, it evolved into a major provider of roadside assistance, vehicle insurance, and breakdown recovery services. The brand is synonymous with British motoring heritage and is well-known for its distinctive orange branding and fleet of patrol vehicles.

Over the decades, the RAC has undergone significant corporate restructuring. It was a members' club until 1999, when the breakdown and commercial arm was sold to Lex Service PLC (later renamed RAC plc). Aviva subsequently acquired the company in 2005 before selling it to the Carlyle Group in 2011. Since then, the ownership has evolved through various private equity stakes. As of the mid-2020s, the RAC is under the joint ownership of Silver Lake, a global technology investment firm, and GIC, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund.

While the brand serves the UK market and maintains its headquarters in Walsall and Bristol, its ultimate ownership reflects a modern, international investment structure. Despite these changes in high-level ownership, the RAC remains a British-focused service provider, managing its operations, call centers, and patrol network within the UK to support millions of motorists across the country.
