Osprey is a premier American brand specializing in high-performance backpacks and travel gear, founded in 1974 by Mike Pfotenhauer in Santa Cruz, California. Originally starting as a small custom-made backpack shop, it evolved into a global leader known for innovative features like the first breathable mesh backpanel and custom-molded hip belts. Over the decades, Osprey has balanced its American heritage with a robust global supply chain.

While the brand's design and engineering remain headquartered in Colorado, USA, manufacturing underwent a significant shift in the early 2000s. To maintain quality control and manage growth, Pfotenhauer moved production to Vietnam, where he lived for several years to establish a dedicated design and quality control center. Today, most Osprey products continue to be manufactured in Vietnam to high environmental and labor standards.

In late 2021, Osprey was acquired by Helen of Troy Limited for approximately $414 million. This acquisition placed the brand within a larger corporate portfolio that includes other well-known lifestyle and home brands. Despite the corporate ownership, Osprey maintains its distinct identity and commitment to its 'All Mighty Guarantee,' ensuring long-term sustainability and product longevity for outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.
