The facility was primarily funded through a $250 million donation from Bernie Marcus, the co-founder of Home Depot, and was built on land donated by the Coca-Cola Company.

The aquarium is renowned for its massive habitats, including the Ocean Voyager tank, which houses whale sharks and manta rays.
