Farbwerke Hoechst, originally founded in 1863 in Frankfurt, Germany, was one of the world's most prominent chemical and pharmaceutical companies for over a century. Known for its innovations in dyes and medicines, it was a founding member of IG Farben before being reconstituted as an independent entity after World War II.
Following a series of mergers in the late 1990s, the company's pharmaceutical legacy largely merged with Rhône-Poulenc to form Aventis, which subsequently became part of Sanofi.
