Maker's Mark 101 Proof is a premium expression of the iconic Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky, distinguished by its higher alcohol content compared to the standard 90 proof flagship. The brand's history began in 1953 when T. William 'Bill' Samuels Sr. purchased the Burks' Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky. He famously burned his family's 170-year-old whiskey recipe to create a new, smoother bourbon that replaced the traditional rye grain with soft red winter wheat. This 'wheated' mash bill became the hallmark of the brand, along with the distinctive square bottle and hand-dipped red wax seal designed by Margie Samuels.

All Maker's Mark bourbon is produced at the historic Star Hill Farm distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, which is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. While the brand remained family-led for generations, its ownership transitioned through several major spirits companies over the decades. In 2014, it became part of the Suntory portfolio following the acquisition of Beam Inc. As of 2024, the parent company rebranded as Suntory Global Spirits, reflecting its position as a major player in the international spirits market while maintaining the artisanal production methods at the original Kentucky site.
