According to local lore, a horse belonging to the Marquis de Rocozels was cured of a skin condition after bathing in the spring, leading to the official recognition of the water's healing properties by the French government in 1874.

In 1975, the Avène Hydrotherapy Center was acquired by Pierre Fabre Laboratories, which launched extensive clinical research to validate the water's efficacy. The commercial brand as it is known today, Eau Thermale Avène, was officially launched in 1990.
