Fisherman’s Friend is a historic brand of strong menthol lozenges that originated in the coastal town of Fleetwood, Lancashire, England. Developed in 1865 by pharmacist James Lofthouse, the product was initially a liquid remedy designed to help local deep-sea fishermen combat respiratory issues caused by the freezing and harsh conditions of the North Atlantic. To make it more practical for sea travel, Lofthouse eventually transformed the liquid into the small, iconic lozenges known today.
For nearly a century, the brand remained a local secret until Doreen Lofthouse, who married the founder's grandson, revolutionized the business in the 1960s. Under her leadership, the company transitioned from small-scale production to a global export powerhouse. Despite its international reach, the brand has maintained a deep commitment to its roots; every single lozenge sold worldwide continues to be manufactured at the family’s primary facility in Fleetwood.
Ownership of the brand has remained strictly private and family-controlled for over five generations. As of 2026, the brand is owned by Lofthouse of Fleetwood Ltd., which is held by the Lofthouse family and a family foundation. The brand is famous for its distinctive paper-like (now foil-lined) packaging and its enduring connection to the fishing heritage of northwest England.
