Figma is a leading cloud-based collaborative design and prototyping tool that revolutionized the industry by moving UI/UX design into the browser. Founded in 2012 by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace, the software was developed to allow multiple team members to work on the same design file simultaneously, eliminating the need for complex version control and file sharing. Based in San Francisco, Figma's development occurs primarily in the United States, though its global cloud infrastructure supports users worldwide.
Historically, the brand gained massive popularity for its accessibility and robust prototyping features, leading to a high-profile acquisition attempt by Adobe for $20 billion in 2022. However, the deal was ultimately terminated in late 2023 following regulatory challenges in Europe and the UK. Following this, Figma pivoted toward a public listing and officially debuted on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: FIG) in July 2025. Today, Figma remains an independent, publicly traded company, continuing to expand its product ecosystem with tools like FigJam for whiteboarding and AI-enhanced design workflows.
