nākd. bars were founded in 2004 by Natural Balance Foods, a company started in Oxfordshire, England, by two Californian brothers, Jamie and Greg Combs. The brand gained immense popularity for its 'wholefood' approach, creating snacks using 100% natural, cold-pressed ingredients without added sugars or syrups.

In 2015, the Belgian multinational Lotus Bakeries acquired a majority stake (67%) in Natural Balance Foods to expand its portfolio into the healthy snacking segment. While the brand originated in the UK and much of its production remains there, Lotus Bakeries inaugurated a major new state-of-the-art production facility in Wolseley, South Africa, in early 2024 to support international growth. As of 2026, the brand continues to be a key part of the Lotus Natural Foods division, managed by Lotus Bakeries from its headquarters in Belgium.
