Doppio Passo is a prominent Italian wine brand specializing in varietals from the Puglia region, most notably Primitivo. The brand was originally developed by Casa Vinicola Botter, a family-owned winery founded in 1928 by Maria and Carlo Botter in Fossalta di Piave, near Venice. The name 'Doppio Passo' refers to a traditional 'double-step' production process where a portion of the grapes is harvested at full maturity, while the rest is left to over-ripen on the vine, leading to a second fermentation that enhances the wine's intensity and fruitiness.
In recent years, the brand's ownership structure has evolved through significant industry consolidation. In 2020, a joint venture was formed between the Italian wine group Argea (which includes Botter) and the major German wine and spirits company Rotkäppchen-Mumm Sektkellereien. Argea itself is backed by the private equity firm Clessidra. Today, Doppio Passo is one of the most successful Italian wine brands in Europe, maintaining its production roots in the vineyards of Puglia while operating under the umbrella of a globally significant beverage group.
